2 Her mellifluous name was bestowed in honor of her Portuguese paternal grandmother, Antonia Caetana de Paiva Pereira, daughter of the physician to the Emperor John VI of Portugal.
3 The first woman was admitted to Yale in 1892. The first male student was admitted to Vassar in 1970.
4 Almost a decade later, in 1896, when she attended the traditional festival of the dome of the department of astronomy, she read a long poem she had composed dedicated to the Vassar College Observatory (a fragment of which is shown at the beginning of this chapter) that showed the happiness of that time.
